I mentioned on-mud that part of the process of setting up my business was filing a fictitious name registration ($29) and upon doing so I also discovered I had to list it in a newspaper, the easiest solution to which turned out to cost $52. I understand the original purpose before it, but I know in practice if there's some company out there named something similar to Silver Spaceship Software, they're probably not daily checking the public notices for announcements about this, so it really doesn't serve any practical purpose.

I was wrong about that conclusion. It allows credit-card-processing services to find new phone numbers to spam. (I'm not sure why the Federal DNC doesn't apply to this, but I bet it doesn't, presumably for some 'blah blah it's a business blah blah' even though, technically, it isn't, it's just a fictitious name.)
