google drilling

Here's a useless skill for USAnians to develop. Start with this google satellite map of the US. (If the whole US isn't visible, zoom out a level or grow your browser). Now to google drill to a point of interest (say, to start with, your home), do the following:

  • double-click where your point of interest is
  • change the zoom level substantially by clicking to a new one, say, 5 to 8 notches up
  • double-click where your point of interest is
  • change the zoom level to max zoom
  • if your point of interest is onscreen, you've successfully googledrilled!

This is pretty much impossible to do without practice, which is why it's more of a useless skill to develop than something practical. (It doesn't actually take much practice; just proceed through the steps backwards and memorize something recognizable about the area you need to double-click.) Currently I can googledrill to my apartment building, my mother's house, and Edward's Air Force Base.
