netflix settlement: lawyers win

I didn't even know this was happening, but there was a class-action lawsuit over Netflix's delays in shipping or wonky prioritization scheme or something. Here's what I get as a result:

Current Netflix Members: If you enrolled in a paid membership before January 15, 2005 and were a member on October 19, 2005, you are eligible to receive a free one-month upgrade in service level. For example, if you are on the 3 DVDs at-a-time program, you will be upgraded to the 4 DVDs at-a-time program for one month.

Nit: for some reason I can't cut and paste from this email in Eudora. "Show Source" reveals it as beginning <x-html> (and fortunately I can c&p from the source).

Now, let's look at the long form settlement. Oh wait, that's released as a PDF with images of the documents, so I can't cut and paste from it either! Here, I'll retype it.

If the Court approves this settlement, Plaintiff's Counsel will ask the Court to award, and Defendant has agreed to pay, up to $2,528,000 in attorney's fees and costs. Additionally, Plaintiff's Counsel will ask the Court to award, and Defendant has agreed to pay, Plaintiff $2,000 for his time and effort related to the Litigation.

Fuck you, America.
