This is not about the most important issue in the world, but good lord is the press terrible.

Beyonce was accused of having lip-synced the national anthem at the inauguration. Today she held a press conference, at which she sang the national anthem and then said (transcript mine):

Well, I am a perfectionist and one thing about me I practice until my feet bleed and I did not have time to rehearse with the orchestra--it was a live television show and a very very important emotional show for me, one of my proudest moments, and due to the weather, due to the delay, due to no proper soundcheck, I did not feel comfortable taking a risk. It was about the president and the inauguration and I wanted to make him and my country proud so I decided to sing along with my pre-recorded track which is very common in the music industry and I'm very proud of my performance.

There was apparently a followup question, but it wasn't in the video I transcribed; one press report accounts for it as: 'Knowles added that "it was always the plan" to sing with a backing track and clarified that "yes," she did sing along with it.'

Now, if we take the words from my transcript literally, ignoring the followup, this seems to mean she sang, out loud, into her microphone, accompanied by a pre-recorded track that contained... something. We know it contained the music. So I guess she probably means it was a pre-recorded track containing her vocal as well (hence the "my" in "my pre-recorded track"), or else who cares? (Unless she doesn't understand that nobody cares that the orchestra was prerecorded.)

Now, maybe she meant "sang along" in a figurative way, meaning singing quietly or not singing or something else. But that's not what she said. (It's also not what I heard; it often sounded like I was hearing two voices at once.) And it's not what some of the reports below suggest.

So, how does the press report this?

"The singer, who's performing at the Super Bowl, admitted that she did lip sync on Inauguration Day." Washington Post
Itself undermined by
"She did rely on a pre-recorded vocal track, but she also sang along with it." Washington Post.

"Beyonce sings national anthem at press conference, admits she lip-synced at inauguration" / "Beyonce then performed the tune she admitted to lip-syncing at the President's inauguration. " / "Beyonce said she sang along to her own voice on a "prerecorded track." Fox News

"Beyonce admits she lip synced at Inauguration" Associated Press

"Beyonce: Yes, I was lip-synching" Calgary Sun

"Beyonce admits US anthem 'lip sync'" Irish Independent

If these hacks[1] can't even understand the term "lip sync", good luck with politics, the economy, warfare, or just about anything else they report on.[2]
