Man, I just realized that Suzanne Vega's "Marlene on the Wall" is referring to Marlene Dietrich. Googling, I see that she's mentioned this in interviews, but the reason I figured it out with some degree of certainty beyond the mere coincidence of the name itself is the the choice of metaphor in "she records the rise and fall of every soldier passing". (Marlene Dietrich was well-know for her USO work, on- and, apparently, off-stage.)

I saw parts of a PBS documentary on Marlene Dietrich six or more years ago, so I've had all the evidence I needed to decipher this for quite some time, but I probably hadn't heard the song since then until it shuffleplayed yesterday.
