Ok, as much as I hate the w3c, I will give them this. For a long time, you had to pay $100 or some such to get the jpeg standard. For example, you will not find the jpeg standard anywhere on the website; some hunting around led me to this site selling it (for 234 CHF... that's more like $200?).

So apparently the w3c have flouted 20 years of convention of making you pay for it by actually providing a pdf of the actual standard (note that this is not actually of interest to most people, since there are free implementations all over the place). I wonder if they're violating copyright or they made a special deal or what.
