not a beautiful or unique snowflake

Somebody (fourcoffees?) was ranting about the 300 director doing Watchmen and particularly a pretty goofy quote about reffing the Apocalypse Now / Ride of the Valkyries thing, and I said it seemed like what he was saying was a pretty reasonable choice to me. Not the best choice, but not immediate-blunt-trauma worthy. The comic book is stylized in its own ways and if he wanted to Fight-Club-up Watchmen I could see that working. But anyway:

Here's a bit more of him talking about Watchmen. It's clear he's not Orson Welles so I don't have high hopes, but at least it sounds like his heart is in the right place:

The idea of Watchmen is not to do a CGI movie, but to do it when it's necessary. Like when Doc Manhattan goes to Mars, there's an issue here, we've got to figure that out.

He also says he wants to make a Strangelove or Taxi Driver, not a Fantastic Four.

So, question: it's clear that 300 the movie is basically all spectacle. The question is, is that a reasonable interpretation of the original comic? If so, it may be foolish to overgeneralize from it.
